Can Monero (XMR) Help Us Avoid a Dystopian Future? [VIDEO]
Is Bitcoin (BTC) sustainable?
I always strive for intellectual honesty while maintaining a skeptical mentality in all that I do.
I was pleased to have the opportunity to be joined backstage at MoneroTopia 2022 by Luke Smith, a well-known privacy and FOSS advocate, after his presentation on Why Monero (XMR) Is Crypto for Dystopia Avoidance.
“FOSS stands for Free Open-Source Software. In the 80s and 90s, there was the free software movement which is still around today. It is arguably much more important than cryptocurrency because I look at crypto as a subset of it,” said Smith. “There is less overlap than there should be.”
Luke continued:
“We have to use computers with editable source code because it takes only one line of private source code that you can’t see to send your private data to some server.”
What I like most about Luke Smith, aside from the fact that he walks the talk, is that he embraces skepticism while remaining optimistic.
Luke and I dove deep into everything from Monero’s tail emission and El Salvador’s Bitcoin disaster to Linux, Ubuntu, and getting trustless systems into tyrannical societies.
In the interview below, we discussed zk-SNARKs, Pirate Chain (ARRR), and more broad topics like the UNIX philosophy and FOSS ethos.

During my sit-down with Smith, I learned some unique insights from his perspective on ideology, Bitcoin and Monero conservatism, and privacy.
We also talked about System76, crypto usability, and vulnerabilities. Plus, Luke explained exactly how Bitcoin mass adoption has become a poison pill!
